The Esk Valley at its finest. Good café, grounds walks, and an excellent introduction to the Moors landscape and wildlife.

One of the finest monastic ruins in England, set in a wooded valley near Helmsley. English Heritage — book tickets online. Towering walls of pale stone, deeply atmospheric. Allow 1.5 hours.

"The finest view in England" — 70 miles west across the Vale of York to the Pennines. Café open until 5pm. Then drive to Leeds (~1 hr).

One of Europe's largest covered markets — the Victorian hall that spawned Marks & Spencer. Open from 8am.

Spectacular stained-glass arcades by Frank Matcham (1898–1904). One of the most beautiful covered streets in Britain — worth seeing purely for the architecture.

Stunning domed Victorian building with independent food stalls and boutique shops. A great last lunch before heading south.

Head south on the M1. One dinner + charge stop in the Midlands before the final run home.
